A little more than 10 years ago, I set out with a simple task to create an online citation tool. At the time, many such tools were overly complicated, clunky, or just plain ugly for some reason… and having friends who used them on a daily basis (with annoyance), I wanted to try and make something better. With an interest in web development, I tried to improve on the other plain sites with some more modern web techniques, (at the time at least) like AJAX and other things. After a few late nights coding, I ended up with ‘citation creation’ - a mess of PHP and HTML/jQuery, but functional and apparently useful nonetheless.
Over these ten years, with little-to-no work the website has grown unexpectedly quite popular at certain points (at least for what it is) and been used by many thousands. However also in this time, the broader web has evolved and changed a lot, and this website hasn’t kept pace. Personally, I’ve since moved onto other jobs, developed other apps/projects, and while I’ve kept this website's servers running for free at my own cost without issue, I haven’t been able to invest a proportional amount of time in developing, updating, and keeping the website relevant. On a technical level, the website really now needs a significant overhaul and time investment in order to continue...
Looking at the landscape now compared to the beginning, the competition has also changed substantially. There are new websites/apps for citing sources which have far surpassed citation creation - more modern, offering additional citation styles and so-forth… A simple google search for "citation tool" shows how apparent this is. It's now easier than ever to write citations, and the citation creation website has become far less relevant or necessary in accomplishing this.
TLDR; So with where things are at, I've decided it’s come time to say goodbye to this old website, and on February 15th, citationcreation.com will shut down.
While the website is not nearly as popular as it once was, if you still use the service I hope you are able to find an adequate replacement. As mentioned, there are many options available online.
I'd like to thank all the support and feedback offered by the users over these years - particularly the thankful emails and comments on the blog - it’s been very encouraging and much appreciated - this website was a great little project which initially helped grow my interest in programming and my career, and in turn I hope you enjoyed using it and got some sort of benefit out of it.
Thanks, and all the best.

New update adds onto the refresh of yesterday with a bit of a cleanup on the style changes and the addition of the Chicago citation style. I'm going to be referring to this part as a beta release, so please be sure to check citation formatting before publication, and comment if you notice any issues!

A new layout has been rolled out - highlights include:
- General cleanup - simpler colour scheme.
- Less ads means less clutter (please remember though... citationcreation.com is a free service)
- Show that you "Like" the site on facebook
There haven't really been any functionality changes except for one or two bugfixes, so hopefully this should be a seamless transition - but please be sure to comment if you notice anything.

Its been a little while since an update, but soon Citation Creation will be getting a small overhaul in design and functionality in version 1.0. Design wise there's not much to be said - just expect improved accessibility and an easier to navigate layout. On functionality, we should be seeing custom citation formats aswell.
